Architects MJA are looking to build a surf park from the ruins of a demolition-bound Aussie rules football stadium in Subiaco, Western Australia.
The practice wants to reuse the concrete remains of the Subiaco Oval stadium to build an elevated structure overlooking a man-made wave pool. As part of the plans, bars, restaurants, 220 apartments, a market hall and a football hall of fame would surround the 300m-long surf park.
‘Our vision is to create an inclusive urban landmark where residents and guests experience life changing moments, have clean fun, get fit and feel connected through a shared passion of respect for each other and the planet,’ say the architects.
A link between two nearby stations, on the perimeter of the site, could also be lined with terraced housing.
‘Subi Surf Park will deliver the highest quality man made waves on the planet, and the most authentic surfing experience for new and existing surfers of all ages, experience and ability. Once the lagoon has been filled the water required per annum is equitable to what is currently used on the stadiums lawn,’ they add.
MJA Studio started developing the proposals after it received a letter inviting the practice to consult on the site’s future use.
