Faded grandeur: this 19th century Lisbon apartment is an enticing renovation challenge

Paint might be peelin’ but the Santa Catarina duplex is packed with ornate period details

Grand portions and glorious light are on offer at this Lisbon duplex in Santa Catarina – but it will need a visionary eye to bring it back to its glory days.

The Lisbon property occupies the top two floors of a small 19th-century apartment block in the central neighbourhood and boasts southern and western exposure in a city famed for its sunshine. Peeling paintwork shows it’s in need of modernising and renovation, but there’s plenty to work with.

The lower level houses a series of interconnected drawing rooms (complete period fireplaces) as well as the kitchen and a study, with original floor-to-ceiling shelving. This room is particularly inspiring, and conjures glimpses of the building’s grand past, as does a sweeping stone staircase.

Two staircases (one of which would have been the old servant’s passage) connect to the upper level where there are five bedrooms and two bathrooms. This floor could be reconfigured to add en-suites and better storage.

Parquet flooring, mouldings, high ceilings, fireplaces and French windows are among the cache of treasures available to guide its new owners in their renovation, with Fantastic Frank listing the apartment for €1.8m.
