Crazy golf is popping up in all sorts of places across London and it could be heading to Trafalgar Square next.
Paul Smith has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the idea as part of September’s London Design Festival. The British designer is curating the playable intervention, and has enlisted the likes of Tom Dixon, Mark Wallinger and Camille Walala – as well as the late Zaha Hadid – to devise holes.
Each design will play to the theme of ‘cities for the future’.
‘How often do you get a chance to do that, to turn [Trafalgar Square] into a visionary crazy golf course and enter into the imaginations of some of the most creative brains in the world?’ says Christopher Turner, deputy director of LDF.
‘We wanted some of the most eminent architects and designers to think, to imagine, what the city of the future might be, but make these architectural models functional, playable and fun.’
Hadid’s crazy golf hole was one of the projects the architect worked on prior to her death and features the same organic, curvilinear forms that defined her oeuvre.
Atelier Bow Wow, HAT Projects, NEON and Ordinary Architecture are among the other designers involved.
Paul Smith has meanwhile conceived a Neo-classical clubhouse for the proposed nine-hole course and plans to brighten up the National Gallery steps with colourful stripes for the week-long event.
Past LDF projects in Trafalgar Square include a giant ceramic chess set by designer Jaime Hayón as well was a series of homes, designed by Jasper Morrison, Patternity, Raw Edges and Studioilse.
Adds Turner: ‘Visionary Crazy Golf will be the most ambitious thing the festival has programmed in the square.’
The funding target for the Kickstarter campaign is £120,000, and if reached, the crazy golf installation will go ahead from 16 September.
