Grand Central’s much-loved ‘secret bar’ The Campbell Apartment reopens today after nearly 10 months of renovation.

The haunt is tucked into a hard-to-find corner of the Grand Central Terminal, in what was once the office of millionaire railroad executive John Williams Campbell. It’s been expanded threefold during the refurb, with a smaller bar – dubbed Campbell Palm Court for its palm trees – springing up outside the entrance, and a third bar, Campbell Terrace, taking over a former taxi stand.

Says Scott Gerber, chief executive of the Gerber Group, which now operates the bar: ‘We don’t want it to be that secret place. We want it to be more inclusive. There are so many people who commute through here every day who didn’t know about it.’

Interiors of the historic space are largely intact, including the Florentine decor, coffered ceilings, leaded windows and John Campbell’s old safe. The original wooden bar has also been retained, while lighting has been improved inside the space.

Long-standing bar tender Paris DuRante will be back mixing drinks, but the venue’s rigorously enforced dress code has now been banished.

Improved signage for the venue also means commuters and visitors of the city will be able to discover the old-world charm of The Campbell for themselves.
