Coral Caye has been Francis Ford Coppola’s favourite Belize holiday spot for six years, but its owner has now put the private island on the market.

The 2.5-acre island is located behind the Belize Barrier Reef, surrounded by calm azure waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling, and is covered in mangroves with a pristine sandy beach. Coral Caye is also home to a pair of cottages (Seahorse and Coral) and the main house built by Terry Tao, who has owned the island for the last decade.

Coral Caye was once a commercial fishing camp and is billed as being entirely self-sufficient, relying on solar power and its own rainwater system. It’s a 25-minute boat journey from the beach resort of Placencia, which is located in southern Belize.

Future owners will be able to admire the sea views in all directions from the comfort of the island’s hammocks (furnishings are included in the sale, and the island can accommodate ten guests). Peter McLean of The Corcoran Group is listing the Belize property for $2.195m.
