Creatives may apply: a Catalonian farm building is now a whitewashed studio

Cobalto Studio made it lighter, brighter and super-liveable

Set among olive groves near L’Ampolla in Tarragona, this small whitewashed workshop began life as a casa de aperos, a rural agricultural structure typical of the region. It has since been reworked by Gabriel Escámez of Cobalto Studio as an atelier with living quarters, with the original layout largely preserved.

The interior spans 50 to 61 square metres across two levels. Existing walls, proportions and circulation remain intact, with utilities introduced to make the building habitable. Openings have been adjusted, including circular windows that bring light further into the plan.

Materials follow a restrained palette of ceramic, timber, linen and cane. In the kitchen, glazed tiles in ochre tones sit against rough plaster walls, while built-in elements and open shelving retain the clarity of the original structure. Furnishings combine everyday objects with handmade pieces and found materials, some produced or adapted on site.

Outside, a terrace and small pool sit within 2.6 hectares of olive trees. Water is supplied via a cistern, with solar panels supporting power. Interested parties can contact Cobalto Studio for more details.
