Space Copenhagen designed a playfully elegant take on the French brasserie for Esmée, which blurs the boundaries between restaurant and garden.

The studio’s co-founder Signe Bindslev Henriksen says they wanted to create a ‘fun, lively, urban orangery by bringing the verdant courtyards into the space’.

Esmée’s stone floors are reminiscent of outdoor terraces, emphasised by white-painted columns and potted trees and plants across the restaurant’s interiors. Greenery also trails down the bar from suspended brass shelving, which follows the curve of the bartop below. In a more playful touch, Space Copenhagen has added jungle pattern upholstery – although diners that want real-life greenery can reserve a seat in Esmée’s tree-covered courtyard.

The Copenhagen restaurant, located on Kongens Nytorv public square, serves a range of snacks for guests popping in for a quick bite or light lunch, as well as rotisserie sole, grilled monkfish tail and roasted poussin for diners that want to linger over dinner. The cocktail list is extensive and offers classics, such as pina coladas and old fashioneds, as well as Esmée’s own take on gin and tonics and martinis.
