Concrete is king at this Pasadena home designed for entertaining

The brutalist dwelling has staggering volumes and layered textures

Brutalism turns domestic at this concrete Pasadena home in Oak Knoll, which features soaring vaulted rooms and a stepped backyard pool and decks.

The 2009 home is offered for sale at $6.8m via Derek and Michelle Luczyski of Deasy Penner Podley and comprises a trio of pitched volumes that look like interconnected barns.

Milky translucent glass diffuses light across the Pasadena property’s 5,800 sq ft living spaces, including the living room with its 22-ft-high timber ceiling and floor-to-ceiling monolithic fireplace.

Textures continue in the kitchen, where there’s an oversized marble island with a ‘waterfall edge’. Elsewhere, glass pocket-door peel back to the outdoor terraces.

Bedrooms are located on the main level, including the primary suite with its spa-style bathroom and soaking tub. Two bedrooms have hidden staircases that access ‘secret’ attic playrooms on the upper level, and a separate guesthouse pavilion is also located on the property.

Its 0.47-acre grounds include an ‘amphitheatre’ like saltwater swimming pool and terraces and drought-resistant planting – installed as part of an efficiency upgrade, alongside a tankless water heater, whole-house solar system and LED lighting.
