Woods Bagot has designed new interiors for Journey Beyond’s transcontinental train services, creating carriages that are innately attuned to the Australian landscape.

Huge windows, airy train cars and clean lines lend the first renders of Journey Beyond’s new Gold Service interiors a distinctly futuristic appearance. However, look closer, and you can see the colours and textures of the passing scenery reflected in the design.

Woods Bagot drew on the work of late Indigenous Australian painter Albert Namatjira for the colour palette, and his use of soft grey and rich terracotta is very much in evidence.

It’s a significant upgrade for Journey Beyond’s Gold Service, which travels across the continent and offers twin and single sleeper cabins and a dining cart restaurant. Guests can escape their cabins for new Outback Explorer Lounges furnished with leather sofas and a bar.

These new interiors are the beginning of a major upgrade for the train operator and will be rolled out across The Ghan service – a four-day journey connecting Adelaide and Darwin.
