Website White Noise is offering artists the chance to take over – and ‘creatively destroy’ – a floor of the former BBC Television Centre’s East Tower before it is razed in August.
Three creatives can win a two-month residency on the upper floors of the 1960s building in White City, due for demolition at the end of the summer as part of the redevelopment of the Beeb’s former HQ by developer Stanhope.
‘Since the building is scheduled for demolition, residencies can involve dramatic and permanent changes to the interior environment in any way that does not affect the integrity of the structure,’ the call out says. ‘This could include repainting, planting, introduction of additional structures.’
Applicants will need to get in quick though – the deadline for submissions is Weds 18 May. Floors will be available from 1 June to 30 July 2016, and are accompanied by an artist fee of £1,500 and £1,500 that goes towards production costs.
The much-maligned tower block is where children’s programmes were created. Unlike the circular-shaped block at the centre of the site – commonly referred to as ‘The Doughnut’ – it is not Grade II-listed and will make way for new apartments.
Resident artists will have front row seats to The Doughnut’s transformation. Phase 1 of the project, comprising 432 homes, is due for completion in 2018.
