Brussels’ historic Bozar Centre for Fine Arts has added gastronomic delights to its cultural repertoire, unveiling its newly completed Victor Café.

Belgian architecture practice Robbrecht and Daem took inspiration from the listed building’s Art Deco heritage for the interiors of the eatery, which takes over the site of a bookstore and radio broadcasting studio.

Constructed in 1928, the largely subterranean Bozar – or Palais des Beaux-Arts, as it’s also known – was designed by Victor Horta, who moved away from his signature Art Nouveau forms in favour of Art Deco geometry.

Robbrecht and Daem have used a circular theme inside the café, installing bespoke ‘halo’ chandeliers, a patterned granite floor and circular apertures in the walls, which have been hung with disc-like mirrors.

Elsewhere, dark green leather sofas and booths fill the space – a nod to the original colour scheme Horta used in 1928 – while brass details add a period touch.

Art is also on the menu: Valérie Mannaerts has created three hand-embroidered curtains in collaboration with the architects that divide the café into smaller, intimate spaces.
