Floor-to-ceiling glass connects living spaces to the garden swimming pool at A. Quincy Jones’s midcentury gem, The Calvin House, which has hit the market for $2.995m in Los Angeles.
Jones was a prolific architect responsible for over 5,000 projects, mainly in California, thanks to his long-time collaboration with real-estate developer Joseph Eichler. But even with such a prolific legacy, Calvin House is notable, sitting on a third-acre plot in Tarzana’s exclusive Royal Homes neighbourhood, where terraced lots offer unobstructed city views.
Many Jones-designed homes have been modified or even razed over the decades, but Calvin House is exceptionally well preserved — the current owner removed unsympathetic changes to the 2,202 sq ft, single-storey layout and material palette, restoring Jones’s original vision. Rooms feature high ceilings, new terrazzo floors, custom millwork and glass walls, and original built-ins.
Good Housekeeping referred to Calvin House as ‘A House With the Outdoors Built In’ in one of its 1961 issues, and it’s an apt description. Interior living spaces seem to culminate with the outdoor swimming pool and terraces, visible through sliding glass panes that open to the open-air oasis and frame views of the foliage and the San Fernando Valley and mountains in the distance.
