A functionalist Aarhus Bay beach house asks for €1.74m

Spectacular views and sleek minimalism combine at this beachfront holiday home in Mols Bjerge National Park on the east coast of Denmark’s mainland, Jutland.

The 1975 minimalist property was designed by the little-known ‘furniture architect’ Ole Refsgård. Its simple, unfussy geometric forms were likely inspired by the Functionalist designs of Knud Friis and Elmar Moltke Nielsen. Its owners, who work in the fashion industry and as a furniture buyer, believe that Refsgård worked at the Friis and Moltke architectural firm in Aarhus. They noticed the firm’s signature elements imprinted on the renovated 110 sq m home, including the roof, broad windows, outdoor lighting, and glazed apertures between the ceiling beams—a recurrent feature in villas by Friis & Moltke.

The Danish property comprises three interconnected blocks interspersed with wooden decks and patios. Simple and functional, the layout is open and flexible, with floor-to-ceiling windows spanning the facade, offering views of the wild, windswept landscape that leads to the limestone cliffs of Begtrup Bay and pristine sandy beaches.

The interiors feature plenty of material contrast and texture: dark, restored wooden beams run overhead, juxtaposing the crisp, white-painted brickwork and taupe stones of the flooring and shiplap walls. The kitchen, a new collaboration with the Danish firm Reform, boasts red work counters that nod to the original 1970s design. A nine-metre-long, built-in sofa extends from the corner fireplace along the length of the wall, looking out through the tall windows.

At 115 sq m, listing agent Adam Schnack notes that the ‘holiday home is not large in size—but enormous in effect.’ This sentiment is reflected in its asking price of 15m DKK, approximately €1.74m.
