A 600 year old warehouse reopens as Eneko restaurant in Lisbon

Basque Michelin star chef Eneko Atxa has opened his eponymous Lisbon restaurant inside one of the city’s oldest buildings – a 600-year-old printing factory with a storied gastronomic past.

The building on Rue Maria Luísa Holstein in Lisbon’s riverside neighbourhood Alcântara previously housed the Alcântara Café. Portuguese architect Antonio Pinto converted the vast timber warehouse for its role, and when the celebrated dining spot shuttered its doors in 2013 the historic structure fell into a state of slumber.

Cue Atxa, who has awakened it as not one but two restaurants inside its cavernous space. Half of the industrial building has been given over to informal tapas eatery, Basque, and on the other side of the building’s fluted columns is the more intimate fine dining room Eneko Lisboa.

Atxa’s interventions have been light: heavy velvet drapes and large mirrors complement the heritage structure’s iron beams, high ceilings and steel columns. Other touches include classical sculptures and a moody colour palette.

Diners can expect a menu packed with red mullet and grilled red peppers, roasted lobster, fresh seafood and root dishes.
