This raw beauty in London’s Brixton is a live/work space with big personality.
Formerly a Victorian furniture warehouse established in 1871, the building was imaginatively converted by its current owner in 2010 into a one-bedroom apartment and a large hire space used for exhibitions and events.
The London property – on the market via The Modern House for £1.9 million – is a designated mixed use space. On the ground floor is a single, large room, with a concrete floor, steel pillars, exposed ceiling joists and a staircase ascending to mezzanine-level offices. These open onto a secluded roof terrace.
Double doors on the first floor lead to an open-plan living space. Among its quirks are a free-standing kitchen made from pharmaceutical cabinets, a built-in seating area with integrated bookshelves and hardwood spiral staircase, which deposits inhabitants on the mezzanine bedroom and bathroom.
The converted warehouse’s timber ceiling is left exposed, revealing its irregular roofline. Spanning 4,756 sq ft, the building is a highly flexible space, with good earning potential for its owners.
It sits is on Barrington Road, close to Brixton Village, Brockwell Park and another unusual adaptive-reuse project: The Department Store, converted by Squire & Partners into their offices and restaurants.
