Walk into Muji’s new global flagship store in Tokyo and you could walk out with a new home.
The revamped Yurakucho retail hub is stocked with goods that fulfil ‘basic lifestyle needs’, says Muji. These include everything from food and clothing to stationery and shelter.
A full scale model of its tiny home offering, the Muji Hut, is in store and has been staged as a music room. Staff are on hand to advise would-be-owners about the 9-sq-m micro dwelling, which is expected to retail for around $27,000.
This is also the first time Muji is selling groceries in one of its stores.
‘The goal of the vegetable/fruit market we created is to offer an opportunity for the customers to think about the producers and the places where the food came from, and review their relationship with food,’ said the Japanese lifestyle brand.
Fresh produce is sourced from farms that use little to no pesticides, while floors and shelving units across the market are made from timber to continue the natural theme.
Muji has had a busy few months: earlier this summer it announced it is opening a hotel in early 2019, and will begin selling its Muji Huts this autumn.
