Madhappy’s new LA store has the sky-blue conversation pit of dreams

The 70s revival gets a twist in West Hollywood

PlayLab, Inc. mixed minimalism with retro appeal at Madhappy’s new Los Angeles flagship, which hosts a sunken seating area that’s a modern twist on 70s inspo pics.

The store is located in West Hollywood and is the (mainly digital) fashion brand’s first permanent brick-and-mortar space. Madhappy has built on the success of regional outposts in Aspen, Miami, Soho and East Hampton, perfecting the alchemy for its home city by combining shopping and socialising.

One half of the 2,800 sq ft retail store is dedicated to neatly curated rails of clothes, and the other to a sky-blue conversation pit, towering speakers and an in-house cafe.

PlayLab, Inc. has taken a mostly minimal approach to the interiors, using blocky shapes and smooth surfaces made using concrete and steel. However, the LA-based studio has also spiced things up with a few flashes of colour and texture, including glossy red seating, rough stone stools and a vintage-style lightbox sign.

Shoppers can cross the courtyard and order a coffee and bagel from the in-house cafe, Pantry by Madhappy, via a takeaway counter wrapped in green plywood. Its collaborative menu draws on far-flung corners of the world to offer coffee by Japanese cafe HOTEL DRUGS, and tea, pastries and ready-made goods from Courage Bagels, Giusta, Jon & Vinny’s, Beverly Hills Juice and AWAN.
