Zaishui Art Museum spans a kilometre-long stretch of water in China’s Rizhao, designed by Junya Ishigami to ‘hover’ over the top of a lake.

Shaped like a ribbon, the building is supported by rows of concrete columns which hold up a rippling concrete roof. From the side, the museum looks as if it’s semi-submerged in the lake – and in some places, the floor dips down to allow water to wash inside.

Visitors walking through the museum can expect the unexpected, with parts of the building bright and filled with light and other rooms tucked under lowered sections of the roof. Early photos show people walking along a central concrete pathway beside oversized planters.

The space has been designed to be adaptable, meaning it’s set to host art shows as well as retail concepts.
