Dome: Potato Head’s new ‘Retro-Futurist’ restaurant in Bali

Designed by OMA, it’s inspired by ancient cisterns and Buckminster Fuller’s avant-garde geodesic domes

The Bali beach community Desa Potato Head has expanded once again with a new restaurant called Dome, designed in collaboration with architects at OMA. The name comes from the designers’ primary inspiration: Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome homes, the futuristic, energy-saving shelters that bring people together comfortably. Yet the scheme is executed with local, earthy materials that give it an almost primitive quality.

‘The architecture is so futuristic, so we wanted to break it down with natural elements,’ says Potato Head’s creative director Isaac Larose. ‘If you look closely, you can see the imperfections in the shades of the reclaimed furniture. We decided to celebrate these imperfections rather than hide them.’

He describes the ambience as ‘retro-futurist’ and full of contrasts. Steel-surfaced built-ins and giant JBL speakers are foils for the wood antiques, tribal sculptures and tropical plants. Reflective blue epoxy floors seem to glow from within yet also recall the natural blue of ancient cisterns.

The round metal bar at the centre of the action is echoed by a wide-open oculus in the earthen roof.

‘The skylight… opens up the space to the rest of the Potato Head Studios, where all kinds of cultural events take place,’ says architect David Gianotten, an OMA managing partner.

Dome’s kitchen takes a sustainable approach to food: locally sourced from organic farmers, complemented by offering natural and biodynamic wines. All waste is sorted and managed on-site to minimise the amount sent to landfill.
