Barr Architects gave this Victorian cottage a contemporary twist

Old meets new at this charming Cambridgeshire cottage, where Barr Architects have seamlessly integrated a contemporary extension into a Victorian home.

Located on Coton’s historic high street within the village’s Conservation Area, the five-bedroom Victorian home initially appears similar to its neighbours, with a quaint, white-washed facade adorned with sage green sash windows and blooming wisteria. But step inside, and it’s radically different.

Barr’s angular extension features an inverted arrangement with shared living spaces on the upper level. A light-filled, prism-shaped sitting room overlooks the garden, characterized by geometric glass panes, contoured walls, and a glass Juliet balcony.

The Modern House listed the Cambridgeshire property for £1.425m. It sits on approximately 0.4 acres of gardens and includes a sunken seating area with a fire pit, pizza oven, and barbecue alongside a sprawling lawn. Additional highlights comprise a chicken coop, vegetable gardens, and a 1948 Airstream caravan currently serving as a studio.

At the rear of the plot, a series of workshops and sheds with electrical access offer further potential. Take a peek in the gallery.
