Coffee is served amid ceramics at Shizuoka’s ETHICUS theleema, which functions as a cafe and intimate gallery.

Designer Wataru Tanabe Studio had to get creative with the building, when briefed to design a coffee shop that would also have room for exhibitions by local ceramicists and artists, as the entire space is only 50 sqm. The result is simple, spartan and balanced.

ETHICUS theleema is dotted with stools and stands made from repurposed logs and stones that can be either a spot for someone to sit and sip or part of the exhibition display. Hot drinks are served from behind stainless steel counters, tucked into the corners of the cafe.

The coffee shop’s white pillars and muted colour palette speak to its role as a gallery, and really come alive at night when the huge front windows form frames for the pieces on display within.
