This concrete oasis in the increasingly popular Joshua Tree takes desert minimalism to new heights.

El Cemento Uno is currently under construction and sits within five acres of the Mojave Desert. The two-bedroom brutalist property is designed by URBARC architects with KUD Properties, using an innovative concrete and foam building method, and offers uninterrupted views from its floor-to-ceiling windows.

The California property is accessed by a concrete walkway, which leads to 1,600-sq-ft of interior space. Though austere on the exterior, its rooms are tactile and warm, outfitted with custom terrazzo tiles, electric blinds and rift-cut oak doors. Spaces include a library, reading nook, and two bedroom suites with an outdoor shower.

As well as being energy-efficient, it is earthquake-resistant, fireproof, and promises to protect owners from the high temps of a Joshua Tree summer. Palm Springs – where desert modernism originated – is an hour’s drive, with Los Angeles within two and half hours, and it’s pitched as a vacation home. Work started on site in June 2021, and El Cemento Uno is listed with Compass for $1.75m.
