The city vista stretches for miles at Lisbon rooftop bar Java

Celebrating the views

Seasonal ingredients are served alongside sunset views at Lisbon’s Java, which is laid out to make sure every diner gets the best seat in the house.

Studio PIM oversaw the interiors for the Lisbon restaurant and bar, which occupies a harbourside spot in the capital. It’s been carefully arranged to make sure no one has table envy, with diners stationed either on the terrace or close to a window to maximise views.

Starting with just the building’s bare beams, a roof, and windows smashed by the wind, studio founder Perrine Velge set about transforming the space into a rooftop bar. ‘When you have such an amazing view, it’s easy for that to become the sole focus, but we wanted to create a layout where the view was just a bonus to the atmosphere we’d created inside,’ says Velge.

Java has been clad in what she describes as a ‘very earthy’ terracotta tile, chosen to echo the surrounding Lisbon rooftops. The bar’s interiors are a purposefully ‘voluptuous’ contrast, all arched doorways, deep velvety sofas and glass lighting. Outdoor diners sit on blue and white cane chairs, next to lines of cacti – and close to Java’s street food window, which serves up food straight from the grill.
