Holiday home of the week: a sugar-cube villa in the Portuguese countryside

Old and new worlds collide at Casa Luum in Portugal’s Algarve region, where the rugged, timeworn terrain contrasts crisp white volumes.

Designed by architect Pedro Domingos, the cubic four-bedroom villa near Agostos sits on the site of a ruin, at the end of a long dirt road. The low-slung holiday home unfurls around a semi-enclosed stone swimming pool.

Domingos used local materials to construct the Algarve property, which is available to rent via The Perfect Hideaway from $1,400 per week. Interiors are a masterclass in minimalism with white walls and concrete floors creating a cool, neutral framework for textiles and wooden furniture.

A fireplace designed by Alfonso Mila and Frederic Correa in 1965 takes pride of place in the living room, while shuttered windows and doors are all handmade. Kitchen counters, sinks and benches have been fashioned from natural stone.

Casa Luum is just as much about the outdoor spaces: terraces, patios and decks tumble off its rooms, while a shaded courtyard grounds the property and doubles as outdoor dining area. Further afield are the Ria Formosa nature reserve, beaches and the region’s feted wineries.
