This 1960s Berlin villa is swinging with its gallery-like interiors

The Becker-Benze designed home has been given a contemporary update

Modernity meets 1960s modernism at Villa Becker-Benze, a sprawling private home in west Berlin’s forested Grunewald district.

The 429 sq m building was initially constructed in 1963 by architects K Becker and H D Benze in a signature Berlin modernist style, i.e. with staggered cubic volumes, flat roofs and a plethora of concrete inside and out. Its exterior retains its period aesthetic, with the addition of photo-voltaic panels and an autonomous irrigation system which keeps its gardens in lush condition.

Inside, living spaces unfurl across four levels and maximise the staggered floor plan. Listing agent Fantastic Frank Berlin points to the soaring studio as the standout space, thanks to its five-metre-high ceilings. Still, the free-flowing kitchen and dining area comes a close second, with original cabinetry and fixtures repurposed and refitted as a vintage-but-new freestanding kitchen.

Period features such as the staircase and coffered wooden ceilings, steel girders and quarry-stone fireplaces are celebrated alongside more contemporary interventions like resin floors and pristine white walls and tiling, which give the building a gallery feel.

There are also unexpected pops of colour to be discovered in the powder room, with its original light blue and yellow tiles, and the Finnish sauna and spa area, built in natural woods.

Villa Becker-Benze is asking for €3.93m via Fantastic Frank Berlin.
