A cantilevering Harry Gesner ‘boat home’ is for sale in Los Angeles

It might be landlocked, but this cantilevering Los Angeles property, designed by self-taught architect Harry Gesner, is inspired by nautical living.

The boat home, at 7149 Woodrow Wilson Drive, is one of eight that Gesner built in collaboration with Norwegian master shipwrights on a steep Hollywood Hills plot in the late 1950s.

Its angular rooms recall a ship’s cabin, and, uniquely, it features has side windows that capture sweeping views of the Hollywood sign across Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley.

The two-bedroom Los Angeles property is listed with Justin Freeling and Rob Kallick of Take Sunset at Compass for $920,000. Soothing midcentury interiors unravel across 1,136 sq ft, wrapped in painted timber planks, with cork flooring running underfoot and beams crossing the ceilings.

Sliding glass doors lead out onto the terrace, while cabinetry and furniture are built-in, with a modern wood-burning stove sitting in front of a glazed-tile fireplace in the living room that wouldn’t be out of place in a mountain cabin.
